A Fresh Start for 2026: Simple Silhouettes, Beautiful Batiks

A Fresh Start for 2026: Simple Silhouettes, Beautiful Batiks

A new year always inspires fresh plans, and for 2026 I’m focusing on simplicity, skill-building, and sewing garments that will truly serve my everyday wardrobe. Rather than diving into trends or overstuffed project lists, I’m returning to thoughtful basics—clean silhouettes, wearable fabrics, and patterns that allow the beauty of batik to take center stage.

Throughout 2025 I bookmarked several garments that stood out for their shape, versatility, and construction. Each one has earned a place on my 2026 sewing list, not because I need a closet full of new garments, but because each offers an opportunity to refine a skill: perfecting a shirt fit, exploring drape, sewing with linen, mastering knit necklines, or building confidence with structured fabrics like canvas and corduroy.

Whether your goal for 2026 is to expand your sewing skills, refresh your wardrobe essentials, or simply enjoy the process of making, I hope these pattern-and-fabric pairings inspire you. Below you’ll find each pattern linked, paired with the SewBatik substrate that best showcases its lines and shape.

And if you have your own sewing plans for the year, you’re welcome to browse our entire batik fabric collection to find the fibers, textures, and colors that match your 2026 goals.

I’ve sewn many garments from Itch to Stitch, and Kenna’s patterns continue to stand out for their thoughtful drafting and reliable fit. For 2026, two of her designs rose to the top of my garment list—each showcasing a different SewBatik substrate and a different sewing skill to refine.
Batik Cotton - Laon Shirt Pattern from Itch to Stitch

Batik Cotton + Laon Shirt by Itch to Stitch

A crisp, structured classic shirt is a wardrobe staple—and the Laon Classic Shirt is beautifully drafted with princess seams, precise collar shaping, and a clean button placket. Our 112" Batik Cotton presses sharply and holds seam structure exceptionally well, making it a perfect match for a tailored fit. The elegant shade I've selected is Cream Pearl in the motif of Valhalla, it elevates this basic shirt into something truly special.

Batik Viscose Jersey Knit + Iguazu Top by Itch to Stitch

The Iguazu Top is all about drape, and our Viscose Jersey Knit delivers it effortlessly. The fabric’s soft, liquid movement brings the waterfall cowl to life without clinging. Smooth, cool, and fluid, it creates a polished top that layers easily under jackets or cardigans. I've selected the rich and bold Jubilee Red shade of Viscose Jersey Knit - and I love the Medora Flora motif.

Batik Corduroy + Lovissa Denim Dress by Named

Lovissa Denim Dress shown with Hand Dyed - Steel Batik Corduroy

Our 16-wale Batik Corduroy is soft, flexible, and lightweight-to-midweight—ideal for garments that need structure without stiffness. The hand-dyed color of Steel creates dimensional shading across the nap, giving the Lovissa Denim Dress a rich, bold look. I'm planning to shorten the dress to a shirt length top.

It was difficult to select a Batik Corduroy for my Lovissa - but Steel is absolutely gorgeous. What is your favorite shade?

Batik Linen + Mary White Dress by Merchant & Mills

SewBatik Linen is known for its breathable weave, softening wash after wash. The Mary White Dress—with its relaxed lines and easy fit—lets the linen speak for itself.

The fabric’s natural airflow and gentle drape make it a warm-weather favorite. It’s effortless, unfussy, and perfect for spring, summer - and those snowbird trips to sunny Arizona and Florida!

Batik Cotton Jersey Knit + Tabula Rasa Knit Top/Tunic by Fit For Art Patterns

Tabula Rasa Knit Top featuring Batik Cotton Jersey Knit

Our Batik Cotton Jersey is a medium-weight, breathable knit with 20% stretch and good recovery—meaning your finished garment holds its shape without stretching out.

The Tabula Rasa Tee is a fantastic showcase for batik jersey. Whether choosing the round, V-neck, or boatneck variation (which is my first choice), the Jersey Knit highlights the pattern’s clean lines and everyday wearability. I love this top and you will also!

Batik Rayon + Lexi A-Line Dress by Named

Batik Rayon is my go-to for garments that need beautiful movement and effortless drape. One of my goals for 2026 is to add more dresses to my wardrobe, and this substrate is perfect for the styles I love.

The Lexi A-Line Dress has the simple, flattering shape that really shines in rayon. Its subtle darts and clean neckline highlight the fabric’s swing, and the invisible zipper and lining give me a great opportunity to level up my sewing skills this year.

The final project on my list—and the one I’m most eager to make—is the Sienna Jacket in our 5.0 oz Batik Canvas. It’s practical, beautiful, and exactly the kind of piece I want in my wardrobe this year. I think Hand Dyed Tuxedo will be my fabric choice, in the longer length because my wardrobe is missing a longer length jacket.

Batik Canvas 5.0 oz + Sienna Maker Jacket by Closet Core

Sienna Jacket Pattern featuring 5.0 oz. Batik Canvas

The Sienna Jacket is designed with makers in mind—stylish enough for outerwear, yet light and flexible for studio or everyday work. The pattern includes a shorter, chore-style jacket and a longer, mid-thigh version with deep pockets and a flattering belt.

Our 5.0 oz Batik Canvas is a true garment-weight canvas—structured enough to hold its shape, but soft and flexible enough for comfortable movement. It presses beautifully, topstitches cleanly, and has a smooth hand that makes it ideal for jackets that need both form and ease.
